How do nine words shake the entire music world in one instant? For those performers looking to release a new project with small advance warning, prepare to take a few cues from that starboy himself, XO/Republic superstar The Weeknd. Writing a simple “should we drop Friday? I’m indifferent to be honest” on a mysterious text message photo that appeared on Instagram on Tuesday night, it led the way for My Dear Melancholy,, a six-track set that includes a pair of collaborations with French DJ/producer Gesaffelstein. The songs and set absolutely smashed at the major streaming services, with all six cuts charting in the top ten simultaneously on Apple Music and Spotify’s U.S. lists during its first 48 hours. Lead track “Call Out My Name”, which remains at the top of most major music platforms, secured the highest U.S. first-day total of 2018 so far, launching with an impressive 3.491 million streams at Spotify in its first 24 hours. “Name” (29.38 million streams), “Try Me” (18.08 million) and “Wasted Times” (16.18 million) are still the most prominent selections at the service, with “Name” also racing quickly at Shazam (#4 on the Future Hits chart) and YouTube (16.5 million combined views.) “Try” to keep up with that!
