Every year, as the end of April approaches, the inevitable “It’s Gonna Be May” meme appears in all your social feeds, no matter which one you choose to visit. The annual phenomenon refers to the way in which Justin Timberlake enunciates the song title of *NSYNC’s “It’s Gonna Be Me”, “me” stretched out to “may”, which dominated the pop charts during the summer of 2000. This year, the campaign just happened to coincide with *NSYNC receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame, with the group reuniting for the event. Unsurprisingly, several hits and albums by the act returned to the sales charts: “Gonna” entered the top 100 on iTunes by May 1 and peaked at #89, while “Bye Bye Bye” narrowly edged into the top 200. (The two songs had at least two versions in the top 1500.) Their 2005 Greatest Hits compilation also entered the top ten in the pop category, with 2000 smash No Strings Attached landing just outside. At streaming services, the effect was less noticeable, with no titles from the act making the top 200 on either Apple Music or Spotify. However, overall play and video views for “Gonna” are both up at those respective platforms. After tearin’ up our hearts and charts, we still crave that nostalgia.
