With its powerful music video and message striking a chord with audiences from coast to coast, RCA‚Äôs Childish Gambino is poised to have the biggest song of his career thus far with ‚ÄúThis Is America‚ÄĚ, a statement about past and present African-American symbolism and culture, along with the impact of gun violence today. It can be bold and uncomfortable, but it makes you think, and that‚Äôs what a great piece of art should do. Combining the song‚Äôs first TV performance on Saturday Night Live with the simultaneous video premiere, ‚ÄúAmerica‚ÄĚ soared to #1 on iTunes, where it‚Äôs still out-selling the #2 song by a ratio of 4:1 as of Wednesday afternoon. (The video is also #1 on the service‚Äôs Music Videos tally.) At YouTube, the former #1 Trending clip is now well over 50 million views, while a separate upload of its TV debut adds another two million to that total. Of course, the release is also performing very well on the major streaming services: both Apple Music (#2 U.S.) and Spotify (#1 U.S./#2 Global) are supporting the tune on plenty of larger pop and rap playlists, pulling in about 4.578 million streams around the world at the latter service on Tuesday. It‚Äôs just the start of what‚Äôs sure to be an incredible era for this talented guy. (Images courtesy of mcDJ and RCA Records)
