As he heads toward his third #1 album on the Billboard 200, Island’s Shawn Mendes is shaking up the market with his new self-titled set, which is getting positive reviews among critics and fans alike. The 14-track project, led by the hit “In My Blood”, easily debuted at #1 on iTunes, while its first single returned to the top of the songs chart following deep discounting. Around the world, results were fairly similar, with the album peaking at #1 in 82 of the 99 countries it charted in. On Spotify, with global pop playlisting on its side, all 14 tunes recently cleared a massive 300 million plays at the service, with “Blood” (145.3 million) and “Lost In Japan” (60.9 million) making up over two-thirds of that total. For those songs not issued prior to the set’s arrival, the Julia Michaels-assisted “Like To Be You” (4.035 million) and “Fallin’ All In You” (3.934 million), a cut that also reached the top 200 on iTunes during its opening day, are ahead of the pack. Over on YouTube, some of the more popular audio-only clips from the album include “Why” (263,000 views) and “Perfectly Wrong” (231,000 views), providing several early reactive picks for the next single from it. Don’t be nervous to check out Mendes’s new effort; it’s full of enduring hits. (Images courtesy of Island Records)
