When we think of the notable queens on the scene, larger names such as KSR Group/Atlantic’s Cardi B and YMCMB/Republic’s Nicki Minaj are common answers. That being said, another female performer has emerged with a recent sales chart-topper, and she even has a queenly name to prove it. Capitol’s Queen Naija, a popular YouTube personality, was at #1 on iTunes recently with “Karma”, the follow-up to the viral hit “Medicine”. The song charted outside the U.S. as well, reaching the all-genre chart in 27 countries, while making the top ten in 15. These numbers are comparable to those of when “Medicine” was at its peak, when it scored top ten debuts in 13 of the 33 iTunes affiliates it charted in. The Queen’s song is also on the rise at other services like Spotify, where it’s just shy of 1.1 million plays in under a week. That total is aided by a big add on hip-hop list Love, Sex & Water, which boasts over 1.4 million followers. At two million views and counting, an audio-only video is also reacting well on a platform she’s very familiar with, YouTube, where her own channel has more than 2.8 million followers and just over 200 million views since the spring of 2017. With more music coming, her royal numbers will rise. (Images courtesy of Capitol Records)
