2018 has given us plenty of fresh performers on the horizon, and at Whale Report HQ, we’re all about searching those chart waters for the next big catch before they take over the music world. This week, we’re outside the gray area and inside the Gray area for the first single by a 16-year-old Musical.ly and YouTube star who appears to be taking over the streaming world too. Capitol newcomer Loren Gray released “My Story” on Friday, and given her huge social media audience, the song became an instant hit on several platforms. Making a big debut at #1 and #5 on Spotify’s Global and U.S. Viral charts, respectively, “My” has earned over 900,000 plays thus far at the service. In addition to its worldwide New Music Friday playlisting, the single was added to influential pop playlists like Mood Booster, Pop Rising and Teen Party, where the performer is on the cover and appears in a handful of video segments. There are more than 1.1 million views for a lyric video for the single on YouTube, which has generated all sorts of unofficial videos and reaction clips at a platform Gray knows very well. Though its action isn’t nearly as impressive on Apple Music or Shazam, with about 1,200 tags at the latter, there’s still time for her song to grow around the world. That being said, with a story like hers, you won’t be able to put it down! (Images courtesy of Virgin and Capitol Records)
